Menus- Request & Edit

How to Create & Edit Menus

The Menu controls the structure navigation of the site and page parent/child/sibling relationships. It should reflect the site structure (url paths) of the pages on the site. You won’t have the appropriate menu displaying on your page until you have added said page as a link to a menu and attached that menu’s corresponding ACD to said page.

Note: You CANNOT create new menus. You can only edit existing ones. If you need a new menu please send a request to, please submit a ticket via our intake form.

Build out the Menu Links (aka tabs)

Step 1: Navigate to the Menu

Hover over ‘Structure’ and select ‘Menus’

You will be taken to the list of the menus that were deployed for your site.

Step 2: Select the Menu to Edit

Decide which Menu item you want to work on and select the ‘Edit menu’ for that item

  • At this point you will be adding links to the menu you are editing. Each link will represent a page in that menu and will show up as a ‘tab’ in the navigation ribbon below the billboard of your page.

Step 3: Add a New Link

At this point you will be adding links to the menu you are editing. Each link will
represent a page in that menu and will show up as a ‘tab’ in the navigation ribbon below
the billboard of your page.

Click the blue ‘+ Add link’ button at the top left to add a link to your menu as described above.

Step 4: Configure the Link

Now fill out the following fields on the ‘Edit menu link’ page that should have pulled up

  • Link- Start typing the title of the page you wish to link to. Select it from the list of options that appear. You must enter this link as an Internal Link (don’t write out the url) If you do Not see your page appear in the list to select then paste in your page’s node. See the Links/Hyperlinks guide for more info

Note: DO NOT LINK TO EXTERNAL SITES. The menu is meant to help users navigate YOUR site. Not Pulse, Wikipedia, a giving form, or any other site other than the one they are on. External links can be added Anywhere else on your pages but not the menu/navigation.

  •  Enabled checkbox- Leave this box checked UNLESS you specifically don’t want your page to appear in the menu/navigation ribbon but you still want sibling pages and breadcrumbs to show on your page.

  • Menu link title - Write out what text you want to appear in the menu/navigation tab to represent this link. This should be simple and straightforward, staying true to the title of the page as much as possible. SO if the page you are creating this link to is called ‘Primary Faculty’ then you could type exactly that in this field. However, do try not to type long titles in this field as it won’t look good in the navigation ribbon on the page (there is only so much space in the navigation).

  • Active Trail - Check the box for Show “Back to” link on menu.

  • Menu Level - Set to Child.

  • Parent Link - Using the already added links available in the drop-down, select the link that is most appropriate as the ‘parent’ of the page you are creating this current menu link for. The parent link can be thought of as a category so select the category from the dropdown that should encompass the page you are creating this menu link for.

Every time you create a new menu link, it will appear in this ‘Parent link’ dropdown. The parent link you choose for your particular menu link should follow along with that page’s url structure.

Ex: I just created three new menu links. They were for the following pages:

/research/animals

/research/animals/dogs

/research/animals/cats

For ‘/research/animals’ I chose ‘<Research>’ from the ‘Parent link’ dropdown

For ‘/research/animals/dogs’ I chose ‘--Animals’ from the ‘Parent link’ dropdown

For ‘/research/animals/cats’ I chose ‘--Animals’ from the ‘Parent link’ dropdown

  • Weight – This controls the order that the menu tabs display in the navigation ribbon on your page. If all pages have ‘0’ as their weight then they will just display alphabetically but if you want them to show in a particular order then you will have to edit each menu link and select a different weight number. They will then appear chronologically.

Step 5: Save and Repeat

  • Click the blue Save button to finalize.
    • Repeat the process for each additional menu link.

Please remember that menus/navigation will not display visibly on your page unless you have added an Access Control Department to the page.

Key Notes

  • Permissions: Only Admin roles can add drop-downs to menus.
  • Double click functionality: Adding pages on menu twice may mess up the breadcrumbs but not as bad as if we add a # and move the page in question under that.
  • Contact: For new menu requests or complex setups, submit a ticket.

If you have any questions or run into any issues, please submit a ticket via our intake form.
