We are expert researchers, providers, and faculty. To reflect that in the imagery we use on our website or other outward facing materials, follow standard professional headshot practices.
Because of this, we ask that you submit headshots that meet the following guidelines.
Image Size and Quality
Please submit an image that meets the following technical characteristics:
- Format: PNG or JPG photo between 2–5 MB
- High resolution (250-350px)
- 3x4 aspect ratio
- Portrait/vertical orientation
Image Individual Composition, Posture, & Lighting
The way you sit and what you wear can also affect how your viewers see you. We recommend these standards:
- Face the camera.
- Have the image show your face and shoulders.
- Have good posture and look directly at the camera/viewer.
- Appear confident, friendly, and experienced.
- Keep your face in clear lighting that is not heavily shadowed.
- Pick a background that is a neutral solid color. It can be indoor or outdoor.
Logos/Clothing
- Only University of Utah logos/words may be on clothing (or affiliated institutions such as Huntsman Cancer Institute).
- Please keep your clothing, hair and any makeup or jewelry professional so that they do not distract from the image focus—you. (No tank tops or T-shirts please.)
If possible, keep your photo up-to-date so patients and students can recognize you.
Aim to refresh your headshots every 1–2 years or whenever there are significant changes to your physical appearance. If you change your hairstyles or facial hair, viewers may not be able to recognize you.
Free Headshots
Free headshots are offered weekly for faculty and staff in the Marriott Library. Find information on the Marriott calendar. Again, our goal is to showcase the expertise of our institution and be approachable to our audiences. After all—they are here to see you.
